HydroCAD Supports Cupolex Concrete Forming System

HydroCAD provides direct support for the Cupolex concrete forming system produced by Pontarolo Engineering Inc. of Ontario Canada.  This allows Cupolex products to be easily used within any HydroCAD model for stormwater storage, detention, or infiltration.  HydroCAD also includes an interactive chamber wizard, which greatly simplifies the layout, pricing, and modeling of underground storage systems.

Cupolex systems can be modeled with HydroCAD-10.1 or later.  If you have an earlier version you must obtain a program update in order to model Cupolex systems.

How chambers are modeled

In a HydroCAD model, stormwater chambers typically appear as part of the storage definition for a "pond".  In the simplest case, HydroCAD calculates the available storage for use with other calculations.  But more often, it is used to generate a complete inflow or runoff hydrograph and route it through the pond.  The resulting analysis indicates the water levels attained throughout the rainfall event, as well as any discharge that may occur through outlet devices or infiltration into the surrounding ground.

Flexible storage options

Each pond may include an unlimited number of storage definitions as required to describe its overall storage characteristics.  This makes it easy to model complex storage arrangements, such as a combination of multiple chambers, pipe storage, catch basins, or other contributing volumes.

When using the HydroCAD Chamber Wizard, Cupolex systems can be quickly configured for any desired storage capacity, with system dimensions and concrete requirements calculated immediately.  Based on the unique Cupolex design, a detailed stage-storage curve is also calculated which allows a full hydrograph routing analysis to be easily performed.

Using Cupolex forms

Setting up a pond to use Cupolex forms is a simple process:  After launching the HydroCAD Chamber Wizard select the desired Pontarola product (Cupolex or Cupolex Rialto) and system height.  As you adjust the system size, the storage volume is automatically calculated, along with the concrete requirements.  Cupolex products can also be modeled with the classic "Prefab Chamber" option, but the Chamber Wizard is preferred for automatic handling of system layout and concrete requirements.

Detailed chamber information

For the Cupolex Rialto, HydroCAD includes the approximate storage volume for the 2.46" perimeter space where the support tubes extend beyond the domes.

For the Rialto and Cupolex Rialto, an additional 2" perimeter space (border) is allowed between the modules and the concrete wall.  Consistent with the manufacturer's design practices, HydroCAD does not include the volume in this 2" space.  This allows for construction tolerances while being able to provide a guaranteed minimum storage volume.
